Nursing Management

The highly skilled occupation of nursing involves the ability to endure long hours whilst remaining dedicated to one’s work. Performance levels should never show a decline, one should always show respect, caring, and motivation within the field under which one is employed. Nursing management involves having obtained a higher qualification or degree, for example, being qualified within the doctorate field of nursing and undergoing suitable skilled training in order to carry out a position as such successfully. In today’s life, there is a shortage of nurses and as a result, many hospitals and caring institutions are unable to provide the efficient service for which they stand. Nursing is a very rewarding career and although extremely demanding of one’s time, this skilled profession is admired and respected by many. Nursing management is a profession that any skilled and educated individual within the field of nursing may apply for, one must be aware though that this position may be even more demanding and time consuming than the profession of nursing.

The task of nursing management is to oversee that the duties of the nurses within a particular nursing unit are done properly and that performance levels are optimal. Undertaking a position such as nursing manager entails that you are not only playing the role of a leader, but also the role of a mentor, supervisor and role model. Nursing management teams should always portray their services and their skills within the light and vision of the organization under which they are employed. Nurses overseen by management are role players, if they see that their nursing manager reflects the light and the vision of the organization, then he or she will be able to imitate this vision too with ease, therefore, as a role model, nursing manager’s are under constant pressure to live up to the expectations of the hospital.

Crucial nursing management skills involve team leadership and building of a team spirit between the staff members. Nursing staff will work more happily and more efficiently in an environment in which they feel that they have good working relationships with co-workers, therefore, as a nurse manager, it is your task to ensure and encourage teamwork between employed nurses and efficient and reliable service provided to all patients. Nursing management also means overseeing patient care within the unit and ensuring that all nurses are performing duties optimally. As a nursing manager one may easily start to suffer from fatigue due to long hours of work, as well as burn out and excessive stress levels. An efficient nursing manager is therefore the person who can think critically and creatively as well as being able to work effectively under pressure and not being susceptible to extreme exhaustion due to excessively long hours of work.
