The occupation of a pediatric nurse is based on passion and the rewards are endless. A pediatric nurse works with infants and children of all ages and is qualified within his or her field of work. These nurses are professionally registered as healthcare workers and they work alongside medical doctors, assisting with the care of patients as needed. The pediatric nurse plays an important role. Through working with young children, parents may possibly become very anxious and experience worry and distress. It is therefore not only your task to take care of the child’s needs but to also ensure that the parents’ needs of safety and security for their children are too taken care of.

Pediatric nursing involves many dangers, it is vital for proper procedures to be followed at all times to ensure that unforeseen accidents do not happen. Deciding to follow this profession entails that you are exposing yourself to all forms of acute hazards and infectious diseases carried by some infants and children, it is therefore of utmost importance that proper procedure be followed at all times, this includes wearing the proper nursing uniform. As a pediatric nurse, you will be expected to work shifts, this is not only very tiring both mentally and physically but it may also result in burnout and suffering from excessive stress. Time spent with your own family may be limited and you will have little time for yourself, therefore, many nurses who have been working in this field do it for their passion and love of children, not simply because it is a job.

In order to become a pediatric nurse, there will be certain rules and guidelines that one will need to follow at all times. Primarily, your main concern surrounds the children you are working with but your ethics and method of working would need to be in accordance with hospital policies. Secondly, patient and family confidentiality is of utmost importance at all times, it is important for the family and child to know that you are their confidant and that they can trust you with their feelings of sadness and worry. A pediatric nurse should always complete his or her duties fully and no matter how tired one is the needs of the patient and the family come first. As a pediatric nurse one is always learning new information and knowledge, this is especially beneficial for persons who wish to study further and who wish to improve their ranking. Knowledge is endless and with years of experience, many pediatrician doctors are able to assist in this regard. As a pediatric nurse, you need to be willing to work with all kinds of patients, ranging from the infant who has terminal cancer to the teenager who has wisdom teeth removed. Mentally strong people are therefore most suited to this type of profession, unfortunately, with this kind of work, our emotions are not going to help the patient get better, only skill and knowledge may achieve this.
